The area around Daitaiji Temple is surrounded by bamboo groves, and every spring many bamboo shoots grow there. However, once they exceed the size at which they can be eaten as bamboo shoots, they have no choice but to become bamboo groves. In addition to this, bamboos have their roots so deep in the ground that if left unchecked, they will become an unmanageable bamboo grove.
To make rather good use of such bamboo groves, Daitaiji offers a bamboo lantern making experience. The process begins with choosing the bamboo you want, and then using a special drill, you drill holes in the bamboo as you wish. When the completed bamboo lanterns are lit, a fantastic atmosphere is created. In particular, by using candles, the flickering of the flames might catch your eye. By decorating your home or garden, you will feel the passage of time a little differently than usual.
